The United Airlines commercial:

But this is what happens on United if you don't "volunteer" to be bumped:

Geez, I saw that on Yahoo news and an article this morning that said he tried to go back and get on again! Never could figure out why these airlines overbook flights like that.

I'm betting next we'll hear about him suing them.

by

Yes, United handled it stupidly (although I've heard in the news that that passenger was no angel either). Bumping is supposed to take place in the terminal, not after the passengers are seated.

Oh - T(h)ink! :O :ermm: (that is not so funny - indeed).

Actually, that is terrible.

If I remember well, I flew with United quite a while ago, and there was no problem with lacking seats or people being dragged out (in the cheaper class, of course and with no big bumps). The organisation by then was correct and smooth.

How could that happen?

The airline personnel were stupid and the passenger apparently wasn't a model of decorum either.

Wow - here in Europe, there have been uproars and heavy criticisms against such unfair and brutal  practices. And they say that this is legal ...

@ Marianne:

LOLA "Shitstorm"?  I hadn't heard of this expression creeping into German before! :D

by

@T(h)ink

Lol - me neither, and that is certainly a German creation, because they have already a German expression with a slightly different meaning - you know Sch***sturm, which refers to a "damned" (or bl***) storm and not a storm or avalanche of ***. Anyway, these words (in English and German) have the same roots.

https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitstorm (extremely short)

https://de.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shitstorm (detailed info in German)

But, according to the Spiegel, they also compared their clients to luggage (and remembering how luggage is being thrown around) - well ...

by

LOLWell, "shitstorm" certainly seems to have found favor not only in Germany, but in Switzerland too. :O

"Der Begriff wurde in Deutschland zum Anglizismus des Jahres 2011[4] und in der Schweiz zum Wort des Jahres 2012[5] gewählt."  :D

by

Lol - yes, after one more year of "testing"! :D:D:D

by

Yes, well, the Swiss seem to be more conservative in such linguistic matters, before accepting additions or changes.  :angel: :) :D

by

Well, with four national languages and many dialects, we have to deal with many additions and changes - lol.

:angel::):D

@ Marianne:

Do Swiss school children have to study all four languages equally, or is special emphasis given to one in the area in which it is predominantly spoken?

by

Normally, Swiss school children are expected to learn at least two of our main national languages (i.e. German, French, or Italian), and in the first place, of course, the language of the "home" Canton or place, and at least one of the other main languages.

But there have been frequently sharp polemics since long about learning English as a second language, instead of one of our main national languages, mainly due to business and tourism, and also because of the various immigration waves.
