The Conch Republic (La República de la Concha) ?:O

image

Don't they know what la concha means in certain places? Yes, of course they do. :D

by

Hi OtherTink, well I am still googling, here...I though CONCH was a kind of big beautiful sea shell?

by

Hi Virginia,

Yes, in English, that's what conch means, but google 'Conch Republic'. It also has an 'official' Spanish name, which would be taken quite differently in Colombia or Argentina.  :O :D

by

OtherTink, I am still not certain I found what you are referring to, but having a wonderful time...these folks in Key West are just my kind of liberal-left-leaning! They conduct war by pelting American troops with stale Cuban bread, for exactly one minute...

"...irreverent tie-dye-clad liberals who make Berkeley look like Republicans. And the most masterful act of Key West political satire was their declaration of independence from the US in 1982."

@ Virginia:

In the first sentence of the article: "La República de la Concha". :O :D

You can then google concha in the Urban Dictionary (caution: adult content) :O :blush: :O :D

Aha, I had a hunch this might be leading to adult content...okay, ima go there now!

by

I hope you're not too shocked!  :O :blush: :D

by

I had fun, OtherTink! UrbanD was even discussing the fact that the shell does not really have the same pejorative connotation among South American women as the corresponding American slang word...

by

@ Virginia:

One has to be sooo careful nowadays. :O :blush: :D

HelpI don't know my fanny from my bum!

image

I KNOW I might sound a bit dumb,

But in England, my fanny's my ...um...

They're simply uncanny,

Those words, bum and fanny;

In the U.S., my fanny's my bum!

by

'nkay, NotherTink...she sweet, and so is her poetry too!

...and now, ima go post a Q about imaginary friends...

by

@T(h)ink

Lol :D:D - I couldn't help giggling - and certain very innocent looking pictures can also explain certain meanings.

I'd rather skip the worst definitions (and some less used ones too) regarding false friends :

Wait a minute!

Jumper, as an article of clothing, means the same in the US as in Britain!  :D

by

Lol - yes, this shows that the sources ought to be checked more thoroughly - and didn't you recommend the Urban Dictionary? It is like going on a discovery tour - lol!

Marianne, THAT is unbelievably clever, delightful cartoon!

@ Marianne:
Lol, I recommended the Urban Dictionary for more risqué slang words.  :blush: :O :) :D
by

@Virginia

Lol - thank you - I only found and entered the url of the picture.

:)

@T(h)ink

Lol - it helps also to take one's precautions before using certain words.

@ Marianne:

Indeed it does.  :O :angel: :) :D

Dear Dan,

I enjoyed reading about these...I actually thought the Nation of Celestial Space was a kind of virtual escape reality where people like me spend much of our ethereal lives...turns out someone really did stake out outer space!

Quite interesting - and I see that the name "Conch" Republic has attracted some particular attention, as definitions and pictures may lead to some more or less guilty thoughts.

By the way:
Regarding Moosylvania, it is "terra nullius":

Marianne, I think this site has been a BAD influence on you!   :O :blush: :) :D

by

Lol - T(h)ink, I'll be honest; the "bad" influence came also from some other sites - and from our very common human flaws ... :O:ermm::angel::D:D

I'm rooting for Molossia :) We drove past it last time I was in Virginia City.
