What was Albert Camus?

by

@ Kinijanin: Albert Camus was a French philosopher, author, and journalist. His views contributed to the rise of the philosophy known as absurdism.

Great quote as I feel about the same way. Interesting man, indeed.

“Blessed are the hearts that can bend; they shall never be broken.”

Guess it kind of figures that one of his plays was Caligula!

I read a book written by Camus ten years ago. If he isn't an atheist what could he be?

Word play.

By the usual definition, an atheist is someone who positively believes there is no god.

But some self-styled atheists claim they are merely not convinced there is a god, hence they do not believe. That's more like the usual definition of an agnostic.

by

Ha ha, well O'Tink that is a point well taken!

There is a quote attributed to Albert Einstein, and as I ponder Camus words I am wondering if God v. no god could be a question where the Einstein approach might apply? I.e., is there some level where we simply leave the thorny opposites behind?

“Problems cannot be solved with the same mind set that created them.”  <3

Assuredly, Virginia.  You have to feel the answer to the question, not argue about it.  :)

"LORD, I have loved the habitation of thy house, and the place where thine honour dwelleth."

by

O'Tink I am sending you a BIG smile, because you have nailed it again, that is just what I was meaning...

(Here is another quote - approximate, anyway - that comes to mind, perhaps this is from the Bible also?)

"Thou wilt keep him in perfect peace, whose mind is stayed on Thee..."

by

Isaiah indeed has a lot of great verses.  :)

"Ho, everyone that thirsteth, come ye to the waters, and he that hath no money; come ye, buy, and eat; yea come, buy wine and milk without money and without price."

by

O'Tink! ...you are something of a biblical scholar! Yes, I am not surprised those are from Isaiah, along with NT John, prolly the books I appreciate most...they tend to inspire/enhance one's own direct experience!

(sigh) to me, however, religion gets off-track when they try to substitute "instruction" for direct experience...not really promoting Dawkins here, I have NOT found him to be a clear thinker...

I am likewise not impressed by Dawkins. He seeks to "understand" the world only in materialist terms, with a positive hostility toward anything transcendental.  I am particularly amused by him when he beats up on fundamentalist creationist straw men.  Yes, the world isn't 6,000 years old, Dick, and dinosaurs didn't coexist with humans, but so what?  :D

by

Yup, unless Dawkins has opened his mind since I checked, he did indeed confine his understanding in the tight little box of materialism...in that sense, you could substitute "atheism" for "religion" in that poster and it would be equally true!  :P  :)    <3

by

Yup indeed, Virginia.  :) <3 :)

And he's rather too pompous for my taste, so he loses on style as well as substance in my book.  :ermm:

by

Hmmm...I don't recall the pomposity, I think I just listened/read a tiny bit and bought out really quick, there!
