The Southern Poverty Law Center which for decades has monitored the activities of domestic terrorist threats to the U.S. considers home grown terror plots to be the greatest (and imminent) threat to the stability of our nation. Their monthly newsletter details various plots, by groups & lone wolves that have increased over the past few years. The SPLC serves as consultants to many law enforcement agencies who may not be aware of the existence of these groups in their own cities.

When we hear of Terror plots, we tend to immediately associate it with ISIL, Al Quaeda or their sub groups. How much of a threat do these groups pose to the interior U.S.?  Not to disregard the sensational and tragic attack on the WTC, how may of the attempted and actual attacks on U.S. soil were carried out by foreigners?

Even the ISIL/ALQ sympathizers or converts seem to be American citizens. What category would you even place those people in?

Many terrorist plots are perpetrated by American citizens.  Timothy McVeigh is a prime example.

Oklahoma City was a devastating attack on Federal agencies with complete disregard to civilians (incl. children) in the building.
