Why did the navigator have to make a tape recording?

Couldn't you just enter your present location and your desired destination, and then the same AI voice could give you your directions as you traveled?

Oh, I think I see now... the information for the city you were in was on the tape, not permanently in the computer memory.

A long trip would require a lot of pre-recorded cassettes.
