To some extent. I worked for a couple of Japanese companies for 12 years and got to know them very well. But there are two physically dissimilar types of Japanese -- the typical face/body type we're familiar with and a second that, to the Western eye, is a little grotesque. (Take that as a euphemism, and my daily contribution to political correctness.)
But while Japanese, Koreans and Chinese often look very similar, south-east Asians are more easy to distinguish. And the individual differences between people of the same race are pronounced when you grow familiar with them.
A few years ago there was an Australian commercial for a small truck that showed three Sumo wrestlers trying to squeeze into a vehicle, but they didn't even get close. Then they climbed into a Toyota and were able to sit comfortably, arms folded, and big smiles on their faces. There was a big smile on mine, too, and a very loud guffaw ... for I knew they weren't the same three wrestlers. Yet, to the unaccustomed Western eye they'd have gotten away with it. >;-)
