That's one of many out there. I've seen it and experienced it and sure as hell learned my lesson. If I'm not sitting somewhere talking to a Lady directly? Then I'm not interested in these scams.

In-person is indeed the best insurance against scamming of that sort, albeit not 100% foolproof.

They are many fake accounts looking for love. I found them on many apps and websites. Many scammers use the same tricks. It makes them more recognizable.

Meeting in person is better and shouldn't send money to strangers on the internet.

I have loved the Internet for making friends, Kninjanin, and I still remember from 2011 on Ask, I saw how people in poor health and could not get out could make friends, they could have lots of wonderful socializing. I still remember Summer Breeze and CandyCane and RustyBoilerz, we never even knew their real names; but they were dying from cancer, and they had a whole wonderful community of friends in their last months of life. 

Occasionally also, you do hear of people who meet a spouse online for a successful marriage; but romance generally? Nope, for some reason it is especially difficult to really know enough about someone just through correspondence -- too many disasters, even when no one is scamming.
