When baking or cooking something sweet, why is salt ALWAYS added?  I'm not a professional baker nor a chef, so please forgive me if I don't understand this.  I keep seeing videos online showing people baking or cooking desserts of various sorts.  And, salt is always added to them.  I just don't know why salt is added when making something sweet.

because salt is an important element in the food processing,

I always thought salt would make sweet food taste salty, thus destroying the sweetness to them.  While it could work for chocolate covered pretzels, I can't understand how it works for other sweets, like cookies, brownies, cakes, etc.

If you eat melon or watermelon, then sprinkle a little salt, and feel the difference
